Top 10 Bathroom Safety Tips
In honor of National Bath Safety Month, LifeTime Solutions' has put together a list of the Top Ten Tips for Older Adults' Bathroom Safety. LifeTime Solutions, affiliate of VNA Community Healthcare, provides worry free private homecare throughout the shoreline, North Haven and Hamden.

  1. Keep the shower and/or tub floor clean - soap scum and mold is very slippery.

  2. Purchase a non-skid mat for your bathtub.

  3. Check the water temperature to avoid scalding injuries.

  4. Use a bathtub rail when you enter and leave the tub. There are many different styles that fit over the tub edge, be sure to adjust the height and grip to your specifications.

  5. Have grab bars installed by a professional, they must be able to held your weight and be at the proper height so they are at hand if you begin to fall. A towel bar is NOT a substitute.

  6. Consider purchasing &a bathtub bench or chair.

  7. Take your time; rushing can increase your risk of falling.
  8. Wet bathroom floors can be dangerous. Make sure you have a bathmat with a rubber, non-skid bottom.

  9. Make sure you have enough light in your bathroom. Many bathrooms without windows can be dark and shadowy.

  10. Consider getting a water proof personal emergency response button, like Link to Life. Help will be on the way at the touch of a button.

Need help getting your bathroom safe? LifeTime Solutions can get you connected to screened handymen and plumbers who can install bathroom fixtures and accessories. LifeTime Solutions also offers a "Staying-Put Check up" where an Occupational Therapist will check your house and health situation and will create a plan to help make your home safe and livable for the future. You'll get information about modifying your home, including your bathroom.
